The Senior Youth Group (grades 9 – 12) meets once per month on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 pm (more or less the last Wednesday of every month).
Here's what a typical evening would look like:
6:00 - 6:30: pizza/food/snacks/socializing
6:30 - 7:00: Covenant Circle (basically a short worship service, but somewhat experimental: drum circles, walking meditations, stories/poetry, different kinds of music and movement, etc.)
7:00 - 9:00: Justice Club: a meaningful discussion, including information sharing, often a short film or documentary, and planning – all of this is related to a different focus issue each month (e.g., climate; food security; economic inequality; race; refugees; etc.). Discussions will (hopefully!!!) lead towards youth-driven participation in social justice activities.
Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 6:00 pm. The focus topic will be EDUCATION POLICY AND PRACTICE: thinking about return to school; issues kids face at school like bullying, stressful classes, high expectations.
Senior Youth will also have the opportunity to participate in UU Wellesley's Coming of Age program. With the support of adult mentors, participants engage in a variety of activities that allow them to ask questions of themselves and their world, explore the meaning of it all and complete a “credo” or “I believe...” project (which could be a short essay, a creative story, a poem, a song, a dance, an art project or a video). At the end of the year in June, CoA youth will have the opportunity to share their work during a Sunday morning worship service.
